Introduction: The 2024 Presidential and Political Organization Elections in Somaliland marked a historic moment, reinforcing the country’s commitment to democratic governance despite complex challenges. The election, held on November 13, 2024, served as a critical test of Somaliland’s electoral system and political resilience, following controversies surrounding the extension of President Muse Bihi Abdi’s 2-years term in 2022. This extension, which sparked significant public unrest, was eventually calmed through the intervention of the elders (Gurti), who facilitated a political agreement. This agreement included a proposal to compile presidential and political parties’ elections agreed to be held November 13, 2024.
The election process was managed by the National Electoral Commission (NEC), which demonstrated professionalism and transparency throughout. This was governed by National Election Law Number 91-2023. The campaigns saw vibrant participation from 3 old political parties and 7 new political organizations, ultimately narrowing the field to three parties for the next five years, reflecting Somaliland’s unique model of Organization system regulation. Campaigning by presidential candidates, including the eventual winner, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro) of Waddani Party, was marked by active public engagement, with key messages emphasizing on unity, economic development, political stability, and inclusivity.
