Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have historically been central to Somaliland’s development, bridging gaps in governance, advocating for human rights, and delivering essential social services. These organizations have played a key role in peacebuilding, capacity building, and fostering democratic governance, often stepping in where government resources are limited.
In recent years, however, many CSOs have faced challenges such as political interference, leadership issues, and sustainability concerns. These factors have weakened their impact, making it crucial to address internal governance, foster innovation, and build resilient funding models. Despite these obstacles, CSOs remain vital to Somaliland’s progress, offering a foundation for inclusive development and community empowerment.
The Center for Democracy and Governance (CDG) has conducted an in-depth study analyzing the challenges and opportunities for revitalizing CSOs in Somaliland. The report outlines actionable recommendations to enhance leadership, strengthen independence, and promote innovative approaches for community-driven development.
